RECOMMENDED BY DRUMAZON FOR STARTERS - THE UK'S BEST SELLING STARTER DRUM KIT
For anyone who is looking to start playing drums or has recently started and is looking for a first drum kit we recommend the Mapex Comet.
Built by Mapex in their factory which has over 35 years experience. The Comet is built using poplar shells which have been an industry standard for many entry level kits. They deliver a great sound and excellent durability. All the metal work is well engineered to a high standard and everything you need to get playing is included - even drum sticks and a drum stool.
THE IMPORTANCE OF CHOOSING THE RIGHT DRUM KIT
The starter drum kit market is flooded with many different makes and options, many of these kits are made by a generic factory and imported by bulk buyers under various names. Often these kits are not very well made, some we have looked at can even have dangerous sharp metal parts, often there is no back up or support when things go wrong.
At Drumazon we are a professional specialist drum store with a team of experienced staff on hand to help, from starter to top flight professional we want to supply you an instrument that delivers great performance and enjoyment. We are aware that many starter kits are purchased by Parents and other Family members for younger players and the options can get confusing very quickly. Our aim has been to simplify the choices offering a complete ready to go option from a reputable musical instrument company that guarantee a great start in to playing drums. On a final note because the Mapex Comet comes from Mapex themselves who also offer professional instruments the aftercare and support is second to none.
MORE ABOUT THE COMET
The Comet is the latest design from Mapex, it is a very nicely designed kit with many features derived from Mapex's semi pro and professional lines of drums. The kit is a 5 piece configuration, 5 piece refers to the amount of drums, this kit has a Bass Drum (sometimes referred to as a Kick Drum) a Snare Drum, Two Mounted Toms and a Floor Tom. This is the standard configuration that most players will start on, it is also the configuration anyone doing graded exams would need to learn on making this teacher friendly too. A big difference compared to many alternative options on the market is the bearing edges offered on the Comet kit. The bearing edge has a huge impact on the quality of sound, Mapex offer the SONIClear bearing edges on the comet which are the same edges found on their top of the range drum kits, the SONIClear edge allows the head to sit flush prompting ease of tuning, increased shell resonance and optimal tonal clarity.
Often the grey area with beginner kits are the cymbals. When referring to the amount of pieces in a kit, cymbals are not counted but this can lead to confusion about whether or not cymbals are included. Mapex developed the Comet to be a complete beginner package and have included cymbals. With this drum kit you get a Pair of 14” Hi-hat cymbals - these are the foot operated cymbals shown to the right hand side in the pictures. You also get a 16” Crash cymbal (shown to the left) This is a bare minimal cymbal configuration which is enough to get you started.
The final part of the kit to discuss are the stands and pedals (often referred to as hardware) The Comet comes complete with all the stands and pedals you need in order to play it. The hardware pack includes a cymbal stand, hi-hat stand, snare drum stand, bass drum pedal, drum stool (sometimes called a drum throne) and two tom holders (for the mounted toms) and 3 floor tom legs (for the floor tom) All of the stands are fully height adjustable meaning the kit is totally universal. The inclusion of the drum stool is another great feature here, often the drum stool is an extra piece to buy. It is also important to note that the drum kit can be set up for right handed or left handed players simply by setting the kit up mirror image (the photos show the kit set up right handed)
FUSION SIZES
We offer the Comet kit is three different set up sizes, this one is the Fusion which is the middle of the range. The bass drum is 20 inches meaning the mounted toms can be set lower than on the largest set which has a 22 inch. In the professional market sizes are often part of a stylistic choice but in the starter market it is more important to choose the sizes that make the kit comfortable to reach and play. The Compact will suit 6 - 10 year olds better than a full size kit (depending on height) but can be set higher to accommodate any height up to Adult, if you are unsure about which size to choose please contact us and we will be happy to guide you.
