Here we have the Holy Grail kit from Noble & Cooley. For anyone who doesn't know, the Star is a completely unique steam bent Solid Shell Maple kit (with the exception of the bass drum which is an 8 ply Maple), produced by N&C for a short period during the late 80's through to the early 90's. The kit is completely iconic with the original short stack toms, single nodal point lugs and furniture grade finishing. This one was made in 1993 making it probably one of the very last ever produced, this is a fully original 4 piece kit. The kit is finished in Translucent Cherry Red Lacquer. The finish on this one is absolutely breathtaking, it's completely original and hasn't faded at all, all of the chrome work is immaculate too. The only upgrade we have done is to add the new N&C Cool Mount Rims Systems, the original mounts were showing their age, the addition of the Cool Mounts is a really fitting upgrade and has made the kit look good as new! Two of the original N&C Branded Evans Resonant heads are still fitted. There is also a specially made covering plate fitted to the bass drum commissioned by the previous owner to cover where a Pearl BB3 mount was fitted, the BB3 mount comes supplied too so the new owner has a drilled or undrilled option for the bass drum.
The original owner who bought the kit in the States has even written a little note about the set inside the shell. If that were not enough, this one comes in some slightly more unusual sizes too, there is a 22 x 14 bass drum and 13 x 6 tom. (Generally kits were 22x18,10x6,12x6,14x7,16x8) We believe that around 24 - 28 Star kits were produced in total making the ownership club super exclusive! - One resides at the Noble & Cooley museum in Massachusetts, it's twin brother is still with Chris Whitten who famously toured the pair around the world with Paul McCartney and Dire Straits.
Like the Solid Shell Maple Snare Drums, Star series toms were constructed out of a single ply of New England Maple at the Noble & Cooley factory. All the drums have double reinforcement rings fitted to the inside, these toms benefit from one single nodal point for the each lug. All the drums are fitted with the original N&C Die-Cast hoops and the tube lugs are all chrome plated brass. Noble & Cooley were one of the first companies to offer RIMS systems as standard with their toms, something that 30 years on is completely common place from most drum companies today. The original RIMS are still fitted, we changed the universal mounting plates out for the new N&C cool mounting brackets. These can be changed back over if the new owner wishes to use different mounting brackets.
Star bass drums were constructed from an 8 ply Maple shell with dual reinforcing rings. N&C offered Pearl or Yamaha spurs as standard at the time. This one has Yamaha Spurs fitted. As mentioned above there is also a Pearl BB3 bass drum mount fitted that will accept Pearl Type tom holders if so desired. The bass drum features a dual nodal point chrome on brass tube lug, this design was unique to the Star Series purposely for the bass drums where it was considered a single point mount would not be strong enough for purpose.
Noble & Cooley STAR drums represent everything that Noble & Cooley stand for. This kit is highly innovative, made with completely zero compromise from the finest materials and components available. These drums are full, rich and pure sounding. They are exactly what you imagine solid shells should sound like. Whilst this kit is highly collectable, it is also completely durable enough to use as a regular set too! As you will see from the pictures this kit has had no problems over the last 29 years, all the original components are still functioning at 100% and this kit will continue to deliver exceptional performance for many decades.
