Here we have a one of a kind drum kit made by VK Drums. We believe this to be the only magnesium shell drum kit anywhere in the world. VK has been making snares from Magnesium for some time, the magnesium has the look and feel of a vintage drum, but the ruggedness of a sports car or fighter aircraft. This drum is made from 2mm thick magesium, which is a great choice for focused tone.

This kit was originally commissioned by a recording studio, the studio asked Alan if he could make a complete Magnesium set with vintage style hardware, as always Alan delivered.

The first thing you notice is how extremely light this set is with the only weight really coming from the stainless steel fittings and walnut wood bass drum hoops. Sonically the kit is very warm sounding with a great focus to the tone, the stainless steel hoops make it feel great to play too. We're always surprised by how focused and warm Metal shell kits are, it's almost the complete opposite of what you would expect. Head selection on metal shell kits will bring about more enhanced changes to the sound when compared to the differences you will hear on a wood kit which will filter certain frequencies out naturally. For example thin single ply heads will resonant more openly than on a wood shell set whilst the most extreme oil filled double ply heads will sound even more dampened meaning a metal shell kit can deliver very well across musical genres too.

The sizes on the set are 12 x 8 tom, 16 x 16 floor tom with a 22 x 12 bass drum. In studio settings producers and engineers often favour shorter depth bass drums for additional definition and quicker low end, this custom size and unique shell spec deliver both in plentiful amounts. Like the toms this bass drum will respond well with many different head combinations to be a sonic chameleon.

So who will this kit suit? This will be a fantastic kit for anyone who needs versatility, it will also be very comfortable in recording environments which it was originally designed for. Metal shell kits are extremely good choices if versatility is part of your drumming life, perhaps moving between bands or studio dates, if the plan however is to dial in to your main go-to sound, this kit will deliver the fantastic results you would expect from a top of the line hand built VK drum set.
