Here we have the incredible Mapex Armory, this is a kit that offers incredible features and looks for a great price. The Armory is made up of a hybrid shell which combines both Maple and Birch, the kit features the Mapex SONIClear bearing edges, suspension mounts and floor tom feet.
The Armory Series follows on from the big brother Saturn which also utilises the Mapex hybrid shell concept. Unlike the Saturn which offers a Maple / Walnut recipe, the Armory is a fusion of birch and maple. Birch and Maple has been done by a few brands over the years and certainly delivers incredible warmth combined with the attack of birch, it's a very pleasing best of both worlds. The new SONIClear bearing edge allows the drumhead to sit flat, bringing out the best response by optimizing the relationship between head and shell.
The shell composition is Birch/Maple/Birch in a 6Ply 7.2mm shell. The new SONIClear Bearing Edge allows for the direct transmission of sound which reduces unwanted frequencies whilst providing a strong fundamental pitch. The drums are said to work better at lower tuning ranges because of this and it's certainly present in the amount of low end possible from the floor toms on this kit.
The SONIClear tom suspension attaches under the lugs but with full freedom of movement and the floor tom feet increase overall resonance by preserving vibration in the shell and keeping stress away from the tension rods, helping the heads stay in tune better.
