The British Drum Company has fast become a big name in drums, and even better is that it's being made in the UK! Founded in 2015 by Award-winning master drum-maker Keith Keough, Kasabian's Ian Matthews, Pub Landlord Al Murray, Stu Warmington and Alan Kitching this brand is already going places.

The Big Softy - Deep, soft and chewy....

On first looking at this snare drum what really gets me going is BDC's incredible attention to detail. Every washer inside this snare is branded with the Big Softy Name, the vent hole is also a secondary badge and there is a beautiful serial numbered sticker inside the drum. The inner and outer cherry veneering is flawless and the brass snare wires are British Drum Co. branded as are the nylon snare straps. Whilst much of this is more based on the look of the drum rather than the sound, it goes to show how committed BDC are to fully realising the complete build of this product. The Palladium lug and snare strainer are both also made by BDC and that is before we talk about the shell. In a world where many drum makers are outsourcing a great deal of components that is certainly not the case with BDC and it makes for a superior looking and feeling product.

Critically acclaimed and revered by the professionals as a studio snare and onstage, whether in a club or arena, this big-sounding 14" x 6.5" is a potent reminder of just how accurately BDC's design concepts target specific sonic responses as well as providing the flexibility to tune up or down a notch to boost the highs or accentuate the lows.

While its 6.5" depth and Cherry inner and outer veneers accentuate the warmth of its response, the key ingredient is its kiln-dried Balsa core. This surprisingly light hardwood has a micro-pore grain structure that filters out higher frequencies, so bigger, warmer and funkier sounds are achieved without detuning.

This snare drum is incredibly responsive and is very at home in both the higher and lower tuning registers but with a much warmer sound than you would associate with many other drums when cranked up in the higher ranges.
