DW started out as a drum school opened in 1972 by Don Lombardi. Shortly after this Don met John Good who came to Don as a student, soon they were working together designing the first height adjustable trap case seat and by 1977 they had bought up Camco Drums tooling and by 1978 had moved to their first production facility. Throughout the 80's DW were very much on the map for their innovative hardware with many high profile drummers using the pedals but the drums didn't come to prominence until 1990. In 1989 Tommy Lee (Motley Crue) purchased a kit from Don and John which helped convince them to fully push DW as a drum brand.
The first catalogue produced in 1990 featured heavy weight players such as Mick Fleetwood, Jim Keltner, Chad Wackerman, Jason Bonham and Tommy Lee and orders for the drums flooded in at the 1990 NAMM show.
Since its first debut at NAMM, DW has pioneered the, the Edge brass/maple snare drum, the concept of smaller F.A.S.T. tom-tom sizes, the Woofer Bass Drum Tone Enhancer and the True-Pitch Tuning System. In addition, DW has perfected a wide variety of Exotic, Lacquer, Satin Oil and FinishPly drum finish choices.
