What we have here is a breathtaking 1976 Ludwig Classic, finished in the timeless White Marine Pearl, and configured in the legendary Big Beat setup. It’s a 3-ply shell with clear maple interiors, and the White Marine Pearl wrap is the original finish. This particular kit arrived from a long time customer and dear friend, who inherited it from within his family. The heads still on the drums are the very ones it came to him with, and the kit sounds so incredible that we've chosen to leave it exactly as it was, it's pure, vintage magic.
So why is this era of Ludwig so highly sought after?
It all starts with the iconic 3-ply shell construction, three layers of carefully selected wood, with reinforcing rings at both the top and bottom. By the mid-'70s, Ludwig had become so synonymous with quality that the demand outpaced the supply of the original lumber, forcing them to source different woods for future production. But these kits are the epitome of craftsmanship, embodying the sound and feel that made Ludwig drums the go-to choice in studios and on stages all over the world.
From the mid-'60s onward, Ludwig wasn’t just a name—it was the name in drums. This kit is a living testament to that legacy, delivering a tone and presence that’s as enduring as the drum history it represents.
The kit is entirely original, the White Marine Pearl has discoloured and is showing wear at the joins - particularly on the 13" tom but this in no way spoils the overall look or performance of the kit. A superb set of drums!
