About ASBA
ASBA is a French drum company who started out in 1927 when Alfred Boudard designed what would become the first music stand. Throughout the decades ASBA would go on to innovate the first double sided adjustable snare strainer which featured on their Super Revelation snare drum, the first boom cymbal stand and the Caroline bass drum pedal famously sold under licence in the USA by Ludwig.
The Caroline pedal was used by many notable drummers in the 70's including Mitch Mitchell. Between the late 40's and the early 80's ASBA drums, percussion and hardware grew in popularity throughout the world eventually enjoying distribution in 25 countries.
In 2016 Guillaume Pornet decided to relaunch the ASBA name and manufacturing of the drums back in France. The first two prototype kits debuted at the BagShow at the Moulin Rouge in 2017 and received extremely good feedback from visitors and the music press. By 2018 a complete team was established including the production facility in Lyon where the the new line up of ASBA drums are exclusively built.
The Revelation Series
For the Revelation ASBA referenced the drum sound of the 1950s opting for a 3 ply Mahogany / Poplar / Mahogany shell with Beech Reinforcement rings top and bottom. All of ASBA’s exclusive production techniques adhere to the companies vintage manufacturing processes from yesteryear. The shells are finished to an extremely high quality with precision finished edges and a beeswax coating on the inside of each shell too. The bearing edges on the Revelation are Rounded with the interior beechwood reinforcement ring 45° bevelled.
Every drum has a paper tag fitted on the interior detailing the model information and date of production. The drum’s shell mounted hardware options are equally impressive, all toms and floor toms get beautifully chrome plated DieCast hoops, each drum has a specially designed air hole that will hold an integrally designed ASBA drum key (one key is supplied for each drum in the set)
The Gull Wing style bass drum spurs and floor tom legs are locked by cast ASBA brackets which are streamlined to perfectly blend in with the iconic diamond ASBA badge and lug design. Again all of these parts adhere to exclusive ASBA designs from the 1960s.
For the particular configuration offered here ASBA leave the mounted tom as an Un-Drilled shell allowing for snare stand mounting which has become the popular option for many drummers favouring this kind of set up. For more complex set ups comprising of 2 or more mounted toms ASBA will supply the toms with brackets fitted. If you do wish to mount the tom on this particular set we would recommend adding a RIMS style mounting system which we will be happy to assist with.
Finally before moving on to how these sound we should quickly talk about the finish. This particular set is finished in Alice Copper, the wrap is expertly executed and is a beautiful looking colour. The bass drum hoops on the set are wooden with inset matching inlays.
The Sound
The reason retro shells have made such a strong comeback over recent years is due their versatility not just across different genre’s but also because of their generally wider tuning range and better dynamic response at lower volumes. The Revelation certainly delivers exactly what you would expect to hear with some of the warmest tones we’ve heard. The toms and floor toms come supplied with ASBA’s own design Dynamic Coated drum heads which are a twin ply design with bonded outer rings to help control unwanted overtones. The result out of the box is a warm, focused and fat sound that is ready to go. The bass drum comes with an ASBA Atomic batter head, this is a 10mil clear head with outer damping ring, the front head is a smooth white with dampening ring. The bass drum sound is punchy yet warm with great presence and focus of the low end from out front. We think this will be a favourite with live and studio engineers too!
ASBA say that all their shells feature their ‘Drum Fit Control Technology’. This is a process developed by ASBA that ensures all of their bearing edges are perfectly flat delivering maximum contact between the head and shell. They designed the shells this way so the drums would deliver at the widest possible tuning range with the fullest tone. Now we’ve had chance to experience the Revelation for ourselves we can confirm that the tuning range and consistency of tone across the spectrum is extremely impressive.
We think any one looking at retro shell kits will love the Revelation but we would also say that this range shouldn’t be pigeonholed. With the appropriate size selections this kit is going to deliver in genres spanning from light Jazz to heavy Rock. It would be a phenomenal recording set but has the looks for live too.
