Here we have something incredibly rare! This is a piece of history that takes us back to the early beginnings of the legendary story that is Brady! The kit we have here was made in December 1990 and is signed inside the bass drum by the one and only Chris Brady. The inscription written in red pen reads "BRADY DRUM CO Hand Made Jarrah Shells 17.12.90 signed Chris Brady"
When Brady released this range of drum kits in 1990 accompanied by that famous 1990 catalogue detailing the latest colours and shell designs for both their snares and kits, I don't think anyone could have predicted the trajectory Brady would take over the next 20 or so years, it's a fascinating story of highs and lows with many twists and turns. The quality of the product in terms of both sound and build was always top flight professional, the snare drums were in super high demand but for most players the kits simply remained out of reach.
I have been really lucky to have dealt with Brady kits and snares through the 2000's and as a kid I remember the first Brady to hit a UK drum store, it was a White Gimlet and the store happened to belong to my Dad. In 1990 seeing a kit finished in this way, offered in square sizes, super deep bass drum, on RIMS mounts and offering an unheard of shell (Jarrah) just blew my mind. It was by far the best sounding kit in the store - the combination of the Jarrah shells and factory fitted Remo Pinstripes produced a sound and tone that can best be described as a Recording Custom on Steroids - it was also by far the most expensive set in the store. In the 90's custom kits were a hard sell but suddenly in 1991 Brady Snares hit the map when Aarron Comess played that killer 1 bar snare intro for the Spin Doctors 'Two Princes' single! Everybody wanted to know 'what the snare was?' and the answer was Brady! Slowly but surely word got round and the snare sales really started to take off, but the kits remained extremely specialist.
By the 2000's Brady had changed the way they were making the kits, they started using single nodal point lugs, there was a choice of shell types and they started to offer a vast range of customisable choices such as the sizes and veneers. Once again the first of these new kits to hit the UK came to me and within a period of 6 months a further two had arrived.
What I really like about the early kits (and they don't get much earlier than this one) is the fact it was built to Chris Brady's vision. Everything on these kits was done for a reason (including the square sizes) I believe these kits represent the purest vision and sonically deliver exactly what Chris had intended. I would go as far as to say the 1990's kit is more iconic than the later kits just because of the formidable sizes and lug design, furthermore they are really rare. It is hard to estimate how many of this design are around but in any given colour I think it's safe to say that you wouldn't need two hands to count them up.
Brady Jarrah Natural Satin
The kit we have here is a 5 piece with 4 toms and the bass drum. We have done some work to help get it ready to go back in to the world for lots more playing but we have kept the work fully in-keeping with the original specs.
The shells were all in all in very good condition, there are a few battle scars here and there but because the kit is Jarrah from inside to out, it is very hard to notice anything unless you look close up. We have given the shells a thorough clean to bring back the beautiful natural satin sheen and we cleaned up all the metal work too. The worst parts of the kit when it arrived to us were the original Purecussion 10 & 12 RIMS mounts which were very rusted and the kit had a Worldmax 14 floor basket, this too was rusted and not up to the standard of the rest of the kit.
We decided to upgrade all 3 RIMS to the newer Gauger Aluminium models (these are the same guys, but the latest design) We got a proper floor tom basket for the 14 and sourced brackets to exactly match the original brackets fitted by Brady on the 16 floor tom to have everything in keeping. Drilling the 14 and fitting the brackets for a complete match is a potential option here but we feel that should be the decision of a final owner, generally we prefer not to drill kits such as this. I should also say at this point that the kit would have originally comes with a Tom RIMS mount for the 14, for anyone wishing to revert the 14" back to a tom this too is still fully possible.
We've also updated the floor tom legs, tom holders and tom brackets to the latest Pearl ones. Brady always used 'Pearl Style' brackets, the originals were very rusted and the tom holders were the very old style TH85 arms and they too were rusted. We've upgrade the tom holders to Pearl Gyro Locks and the floor legs also have the Pearl Air Suspension feet. Finally we've re-headed the tom and bass drum batters, (the original Brady Reso's are still fitted to the 10,14 & 16 toms) and we got an Evans EQ 1 Black reso head fitted with a custom made Brady logo done to the exact specs as it would have appeared back in 1990 which has really brought this set back to life!
Kit Specs:
The toms on this kit are all square - 10 x 10, 12 x 12, 14 x 14 & 16 x 16. The toms are all a quarter inch thick 10 ply Jarrah. The Bass Drum is also 10 ply Jarrah but this is three eighths of an inch thick. The lugs on the kit are all solid brass chromed with two small contact points on the shell, as discussed above Brady were an early adopter of the RIMS systems commending them for the enhanced natural resonance, better fundamental tone, more prominent lows and increased sustain achieved from using them. At the time Brady described their bearing edges as 'slate perfect'
This is a real collectors piece however it was originally built to be extremely durable, the Jarrah shells offer an incredible sonic range. It will be perfect for a collector, serious live or studio player and / or studio / specialist back line owner.
It is very hard to put a price on a kit like this, firstly it is a very rare early example and secondly Brady are not currently building any kits with no indication of if any will ever be produced again. For that reason we are currently accepting offers on this set. If you would like to discuss anything with us please email us: info@drumazon.com or feel free to call us on (029) 2132 1515
