We love it when these come up! Super Classics from the Ludwig Boom Time!
Here we have a stunning 1967 Ludwig Super Classic in Blue Oyster. This is the 3 ply shell, the Blue Oyster wrap the original finish, this kit has been fitted with some updated fittings to enhance the durability for everyday use such as new style bass drum spurs and upgraded floor tom legs and brackets. The black paint work on the bass drum hoops has also been restored. The Bracket for the Cymbal arm on the bass drum is also not functioning correctly and the cymbal arm wasn't with the kit but again these parts are easily picked up and replaced on the second hand market via many sources.
Why is the 1960's period of Ludwig so desired?
Well firstly these drums represent the original 3 ply moulded shell, made from 3 plies of individual (varying) wood type with reinforcement rings at the top and the bottom. By the later years Ludwig drums had become so popular that some of the original lumber used had become so scarce that Ludwig was forced to buy different woods to continue moulding shells to meet demand.
This kit is the same shell configuration and build design as the Black Oyster drum kit played by Ringo Starr on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964 'the show that launched one thousand orders' to quote William F Ludwig.
From the mid sixties onward, Ludwig became 'the most famous name on drums' and this drum kit represents the classic look and tone that made these kits a must have in every studio and on every stage across the world.
The restoration on this set is very tasteful, no additional drilling was done and the parts make the kit very durable making it a perfect players kit.
